The Iberian ibex (Capra pyrenaica) is one of the most exclusive species of the Iberian fauna, given that it is an endemic species of the iberian peninsula, featuring an enormous prestige in the hunting of big game on an international level, this is the main reason behind the relative hihgh prices paid for its trophies
This species can be divided into two subspecies in Spain, the Capra pyrenaica hispanica, which occupies the southern mountain areas of the peninsula and Levante and the Capra pyrenaica victoriae, which inhabits the peninsula’s central mesa, from where it has been introduced into the regions of Batuecas and the Picos de Europa.
The existent subspecies in our Autonomous Community is the Capra pyrenaica victoriae, as it coincides with lofty mountain of unquestionable natural value, belonging to the western sectors of the Sierra de Gredos and after its introduction to the Regional Hunting Reserve of Batuecas (Salamanca, Castilla y León) in the middle of the 70’s, it settled and finally accommodated in the northern area of the region of Cacereña de las Hurdes.
As of today, the surface dedicated to hunting purposes under special regulation, counting with populations of the Iberian ibex and considering the Iberian ibex in the special arrangement and hunting exploitation plan, reaches almost 84,000 acres (75,000 acres in Gredos and 8,900 acres in Hurdes).
